Richard: So, in Cappadocia basically, it was looking at all of these different rock formations, and the balloons, and the underground home… houses. And then from Cappadocia we went to… towards the coast. And this was an interesting journey because you go across the plains and then, maybe 60 kilometers from the coast, you hit the Taurus mountains.

And again, back to the roads. The dual carriageway from Konya to the coast, just south of Anatolia, is a dual carriageway all the way through the mountains. It goes over a thousand meters, so you can travel very fast through the mountains. I am not a great driver. I don’t enjoy driving that much, but I really enjoyed that drive. It was good fun. Lots of motorbikes were on that route to travel around the bends and that… So, that was a really nice drive.

And then when you hit the coast… It’s very similar to Greece, I think. The towns are ‘squeezed’ between the mountains and the sea, so they are very steep. In one town, I was leaning on the steering wheel because I wasn’t comfortable to sit back because it felt the car would tip backwards. I know it wouldn’t, but it felt bad. Even, dang, my wife was leaning forward!

So, the road snakes along the coast, but there are some lovely towns and you can go on excursions to ruins. So, as far as ruins go, I… I don’t normally go to museums or ruins, things like that. I’m more about experiencing towns and the countryside; more natural things. But Turkey has some fantastic ruins. We went to Ephesus and that was… I don’t need to say, that was quite spectacular.

But we also went to Termessos which, I think, is the most magical ruins I’ve ever been to. It’s a… Pisidian. It was built by the Pisidians. The first time it’s mentioned in history is Alexander the Great in 333 BC, marching his army through, didn’t even bother trying to capture it because it’s so impregnable – it is 1,000 meters high. It has an amphitheatre which looks down two valleys – really massive views! And there’s a 1,600-meter high rock behind the amphitheatre. But the lovely thing about it is: you just wander in the pine trees with the temple of Athena rising up; the marketplaces; there’s pillars and stones everywhere; big walls. It’s almost as though you’re discovering it for the first time. We had put aside an hour to go and visit. Three hours wasn’t enough. It was lovely. It was a really, really magical sight.

But, of course, we also went to Pamukkale which is… It has famous ruins there. The amphitheater is probably one of the best we saw. But it also has the thermal spring pools which deposit like a white calcium limestone. And… even though it’s very touristy, it was beautiful and it was… It was a good experience. And if you just walk down the travertine pools, you soon lose the crowd and you can get some great photographs. It’s quite beautiful. So, that was a really nice place to visit. Right, the…

And finally, I would say the coast of Turkey is well worth exploring. There are huge cliffs, beautiful beaches. Dalyan has a natural wetland which is separated from the sea by a fantastic beach which turtles lay their eggs on. And it has beautiful lakes that are really reflective – you see exactly in the water what’s above them. So, that was lovely.

So, yeah, Turkey is a big beautiful place. And if I was to sum up Turkish men in particular, I would say they are like your favorite uncle – trying to persuade you to do something wrong. And on that note, thank you very much!
