Ann: Hello, everybody! My name is Ann Elvin and I live in Houston, Texas. Over Christmas, we decided to take a family vacation and go away for the holidays to Jamaica. I’m sure, as you know, Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean.

It is a very beautiful island and very unusual for the Caribbean and it has a lot of mountains, which make it very green and lush. They grow coffee there which is called Blue Mountain coffee which is probably one of the best coffees in the world. It’s very difficult to get outside of Jamaica. But if you ever see it in the store, try it. It’s really good.

We went away for a week and we stayed in a part of Jamaica called Negril Beach. Negril Beach, when I visited there about forty years ago, was scrubland and bush and a beach that was seven miles long. The only thing that was there were hermit crabs that were all over the beach. No properties, no hotels, nothing. It was very, very beautiful.

This time we went back and we found that there were many, many hotel resorts along the beach, they were everywhere. And it’d become a very popular tourist place. The hotels were very nice. They were very much all inclusive, which means that you get all your food, all your drink, everything included for the price of a night in a hotel.

You can also sail boats; you can go on kayaks; you can go on catamarans; you can do all sorts of things that the resort provides. It’s up to you. Or you can just lie on the beach and read and do nothing. There were eleven of us there, so it was quite a big group, which meant that everybody at some point had somebody to do things with or not. And if you decided you wanted to spend the day just reading a book, you could do that, and we all met up for dinner in the evening.

The Jamaican people are very friendly. They are a lot of fun. And they… As the island purely now seems to rely on tourism, they’re very geared to tourism and hope the tourists come back. We met a lot of British people who can now fly directly from London to Jamaica. So there were a lot of British people there and a lot of Canadians spending the..the holidays there to get away from the cold in Canada.

We really enjoyed it. This was my second year of not being home for the Christmas holidays. And I’m really kind of getting to like the fact that we’re not involved in all the family tree, cooking traditions at home, but just can relax and have a good time together.

I took along eleven Santa Claus’ hats that we all wore on Christmas day so everywhere we went in this resort, which was not… They didn’t have that many people there. Everybody knew we were part of the same group. My granddaughter bought the most hilarious swimsuits for all the men in the group and it was a picture of a cat wearing a Texas cowboy hat with a gun holster, riding a shark!

So, between the Christmas hats and the Christmas kitten, or whatever she was on the swimsuits, everybody had a good time laughing at it. The younger people in the group made a giant sandcastle on the beach! I mean, at least five feet high. So, everybody came by walking the beach that day, took photographs of the sandcastle, ’cause they wrote ‘Merry Christmas’ in the sand. We had a very nice time!
